Lavandula x intermedia ‘Fred Boutin’

Fred Boutin lavender is enchanting in all seasons! This fragrant French-style lavender grows to about 3′ tall when in full bloom; the woody, silver-leaved, evergreen bush itself grows to approximately 18″, and the bloom spikes add an additional 18″ in height each summer. Originally released in 1984 and developed in So. CA, this variety has a medium violet-blue bloom and bud color. Not as intensely fragrant as some varieties, it still graces us with its heady scent; the flower spikes are particularly durable and great for crafts and dried arrangements.

Lavender has dozens of uses! Bloom spikes can be utilized to make flower wands and long-lasting dried arrangements; buds can shine in sachets, and as an ingredient in the famous French spice mix herbes de Provence! A great edible landscape plant, it also attracts and feeds many beneficial insects, especially honey bees. Lavender’s oil has a calming effect on all flying bugs, so it’s especially safe for home landscapes with children. Plant in areas with very good drainage.
